2 GREEK PARTY

PARTY LIKE A GREEK IN CABBAGETOWN

Cabbagetown is known for our Irish roots but don’t let that have you stereotype us as strictly Irish.  We are actually  one of North America’s most culturally diverse areas. Over at Johnny G’s the team there have launched their instantly popular GREEK NIGHTS. Every Friday, 8:30pm – midnight, (and often later) the crew there set up a live music evening with cold plates, fruit dishes and drinks for sale and some complimentary bites (with the order of a drink.) Make sure to check it out, but please, no dish smashing.

1 REPAIR CAFE

BRING IT TO THE REPAIR CAFE IN CABBAGETOWN

On Saturday February 11th from 12-4 pm Central Neighbourhood House will host another Repair Café.  Repair Café invites community members to bring in items in need of fixing.  This is done with a focus of reducing the number of fixable items going to landfills and saving money.  There is no cost to have items repaired!  Throw it away?  No way!  Bring it to Repair Café!

Also the CNH is happy to share that near the end of 2016 the first of their sponsored Syrian refugees arrived in Canada!  They are assisting a family of seven to connect to the many community supports in the city and help them build a new life in Canada.

3 VICTORY VISIT

ENJOY A VICTORY VISIT IN CABBAGETOWN

A victory visit is when you bring your dog to visit their vet’s clinic for nothing but a treat and a happy and memorable experience. It might sound silly, but going to the vet can be stressful for both you and your pet.

If healthy, dogs visit their vet once a year for a check up involving many steps, which even when done lovingly and gently, can scare your dog.   Even medical equipment such as a stethoscope can be frightening. Dogs will often visit the clinic when sick or hurt and associate the space with feeling unwell and unpleasant procedures.

Cabbagetown Pet Clinic wants to help your dog feel less anxious and have positive associations with the clinic. Visit them at any time with your dog and they will be more than happy to give your dog a tasty treat, lots of praise, and (if he’s comfortable with it), a snuggle.  They call this a VICTORY VISIT and the more that these positive visits are reinforced, the more your dog will look forward to coming to the vet.   Visit them anytime at 239 Gerrard Street East.

6 BEAT THE FRIZZ

BEAT THE FRIZZ IN CABBAGETOWN

Winter can be a hard season on your hair. The cold dry air is damaging to your locks as it dries them out causing frizz and breakage. We have close to a billion salons in Cabbagetown, (OK maybe that is an exaggeration), and one of the long standing fixtures, Hair Spa was taken over last winter by Nano Khoury who has enjoyed getting to know the many locals and Cabbagetown enthusiasts who visit our area often.

Right now Nano is thanking everyone for their support during her first year here at Hair Spa with 20% off all services including colour, highlights, cuts, styles and to combat your dry winter hair her special moisture treatments. Visit Hair Spa now through February 28th to take advantage of this offer and get to know one Cabbagetown’s local business owners.

Red velvet cupcakes are perfect for winning over your loved one this Valentine’s Day and if you need a recipe we found one here you need to check out. Other popular treats this time of year are heart shaped shortbread cookies or Italian Baci (which means KISS). Now if you have jumped though these recipes and thought they look delicious but you just don’t have the time, we have a secret to share with you, The Epicure Shop in Cabbagetown has these and other items such as boxed candy and chocolate from David’s ready for you to grab and take home, (just don’t forget to stop at Spruce Home Decor, The Labour Of Love or Shoppers Drug Mart and grab a card too!)

What about your Valentine’s dinner? If you are cooking at home then we suggest heart shaped ricotta ravioli from The Epicure Shop made lovingly right here in Toronto at Continental Noodles. These guys are the top noodle and the only ones in Toronto still using fresh cracked eggs in their recipes.

Have you ever heard of FAT BIKE RACING? To sum it up, fat bike racing is done with bikes with larger, fatter tires good for soft terrain like snow. Cycle Solutions is sponsoring a Fat Bike Race Series in Ontario during the winter months.

The series is a fun opportunity to meet with new people, test ride bikes from different brands, enjoy a hot chocolate and homemade chilli and also (if you are in the mood) to race! These races are organized by Dan Marshal (Substance Projects) and the atmosphere is family friendly. His slogan is “Competitive Bike Racing for Everyone”

The next two races are:
February 4: Northumberland County Forest (Stumbler)

January brought a mild start to 2017, but we are headed back to colder temperatures.

The CRC Clothing Room offers clean, quality adult attire, accessories, and home wares on a by-appointment basis. Community members may schedule one visit per month on Mondays and Fridays (for women) and Tuesdays and Thursdays (for men) from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
