BRITISH MEAT PIES NOW AT LONDON CALLING

This time of year we all reach for some warm comfort food and British meat pies are a perfect example of this! Want to make some yourself? We found this recipe courtesy of the Food Network! If, however, you are just about as talented in the kitchen as we are, (excuse us as we reach for the fire extinguisher) you might want to simplify things and head over to London Calling where shop owner Andrew has stocked up the store with British Meat Pies you can take home!

salt

PROTECT THEIR PAWS IN CABBAGETOWN

Do you salt your sidewalk? Consider what you are using as most salts can be harmful to the environment and especially your pets. When it comes to pets, salt can get lodged in their foot pads where it can heat up to around 170 degrees and cause burns!

For more info check this post from Dogs Naturally Magazine or this post from Rock Salt Alternatives.

TIP: If the packaging says KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN, it is likely not safe for your dog either.

One product you can order locally is Safe-T-Pet Ice Melter which states it was developed with veterinarians and free of salt and other chemicals that can irritate pet’s paws and stomachs.

cheese

SMOKED CHEESE IN CABBAGETOWN

You likely have heard of smoking meats but what about smoked cheese? One way is on a BBQ and we found this cool post explaining how to do it. That said, if you’d rather avoid standing outside in the middle of January scraping frozen melted cheese off your prized BBQ, we suggest heading over to see the team at 420 Smokehouse in Cabbagetown who offer a range of smoked cheeses, (and save your grill for burgers.)

They will be adding the price list to their website soon and inform us they can smoke any cheese as long as they have 24 hours notice! Want to learn more? Ask if Smoking Virginia is around. She’s the Queen Bee of smoking just about everything there and while she may not give all her secrets away, she loves talking about the world of smoked foods!

lights

HOLIDAY LIGHTS IN CABBAGETOWN

The Cabbagetown Residents Association (CRA) held their 2nd Annual Holiday Lights Contest in December. After a see-saw battle between Wellesley and Aberdeen in the final days with Geneva threatening to pull into the lead, the winning photograph was of a home on Wellesley Street East!

Congratulations to the photographers and the homeowners – this was a fun contest that showcased the neighbourhood in a good (ahem) light. To see the winners and all of the entrants, visit the Cabbagetown Residents Association website by clicking here.

The CRA encourages people wanting to get a head start on next year’s contest to visit local Cabbagetown businesses for help with lighting, decoration and other planning needs. (And the BIA bashfully thanks the CRA for plugging our businesses.)

PARLIAMENT EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

If you placed your job search on hold for the holidays, the Centre for Education & Training Employment Services has tips for job hunting for the New Year and the rest of 2017.

Things may have been quiet over past month on the job market, however employers traditionally step up their hiring over the next few weeks. For the month of January, the centre is launching a “Refer-a-Friend” raffle campaign. If you or someone you know is looking for job search assistance, visit the career centre and work with employment service professionals who will be happy to assist you with your search.

A gift card will be given to the winner of the raffle – but remember the gift card is not the only incentive for using Parliament Employment Services… finding your new career is even better!

get-your-brunch-on

GET YOUR BRUNCH ON IN CABBAGETOWN

This time of year is all about comfort food and we found this awesome brunch item recipe you have to try at home! That said, if you rather someone else do the cooking, head over to F’Amelia for their weekend brunch menu. Try their feature Egg POPO: Poached eggs cooked in a Pomodoro sauce, covered with Tuscan bread and Fresh Fior di Latte cheese. MMmmmmm!

Additionally they have extended their food drive for the Daily Bread Food Bank for both in-kind and cash donations.  Food banks in general experience a slowdown in donations this time of year so they thought it appropriate to keep on collecting!

Don’t forget to ask them about Winterlicious running January 27th to February 9th. They are accepting reservations for Winterlicious starting on January 12 and the menu will be published shortly on famelia.com.
