SHOE MAN JOSE TO STAY IN CABBAGETOWN

Earlier this year it looked like Jose Shoe repair might close but Jose has decided to stay and continue to service Cabbagetown and his many customers from across the city.  Jose grew up in Ecuador where at the age of 12 he began to learn the craft of making and repairing shoes. Years later he moved to Cabbagetown Toronto and has now, at age 73, been repairing our shoes here for over 30 years. He says that  having been here for so many years, Cabbagetown feels like home and he loves the people in our area. A true family man, Jose often had his grandchildren spend time with him in the shop, sometimes falling asleep in piles of leather fabric as he sat working at the whirling machines. Having fixed thousands of shoes over the years we asked Jose what is the best way to make sure your shoes last a long time. He replied, “buy good shoes.” CLICK HERE FOR JOSE SHOE REPAIR INFO.

LOCAL CRC RAISES $308,000 FOR COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING

The local CRC hosted their Building Lives Benefit last month. The event raised $308,000 to support their programs including Housing Supports, 40 Oaks Housing Community, Transitional Housing, Drop-in, and Community Enterprises.

Councillor Wong-Tam, Toronto Police 51 Division and Bill Morneau joined our community to supported this event in various ways.

If you are not sure what the CRC does, this snippet from their website sums it up well, “CRC is a place where people do not just get a hand out; they get engaged and form community. Social inclusion happens because people help themselves while helping others whether it is through the provision of food, clothing or shelter and advocacy, each person who is helped, helps another.”  CLICK HERE TO DONATE TO THE CRC TODAY.

OUT ON THE STREET

Proud of the street you live on? Of course you are. While many of our street signs pay homage to our past we would prefer you refrain from swiping them for your home decor needs. We suggest instead paying the team at Kendall & Co. a visit where a wide selection of street names are available as framed art. Can’t find yours or the street of a friend who you want to gift one to… just ask! CLICK HERE FOR KENDALL & CO. INFO.

ADOPT A STREET TREE INFO SESSION: NOV. 26, 1pm – 3pm

On Saturday, November 26, 2016 – 1:00p.m. – 3:00p.m learn how you can adopt a tree! (Less chance of being woken up in the middle of the night and they likely won’t eat all the food in your fridge.)

Healthy trees offer many environmental, economic and health benefits while also bringing beauty and nature into our neighbourhoods. Trees growing on urban streets face harsh conditions which can negatively affect their health – but we can all help! LEAF and the City of Toronto are excited to release the Adopt-a-Street-Tree Manual, a guide for Torontonians on how to care for commercial street trees in their communities. Come learn about existing Adopt-a-Street-Tree pilot projects and find out what resources are available to help you start your own. LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS FREE EVENT.
