What is a BIA?
A BIA (or Business Improvement Area) is an agency of the City of Toronto funded by local property and business owners. BIAs are mandated to assist in making their member businesses prosper. Through streetscape improvements, events, and promotion, the Cabbagetown BIA aims to make Cabbagetown a great place to work, shop, gather, and live.
How are you funded?
All commercial properties within the BIA’s boundaries pay a portion of the Cabbagetown BIA’s levy consistent with their portion of the total assessment of all buildings with the BIA boundaries. For instance, if your building is assessed as 1% of Cabbagetown’s total assessment, you would pay 1% of the BIA’s levy.
I’m a Cabbagetown Resident, do my taxes fund you?
No. The BIA is funded exclusively by the levy collected by its members and the revenue generated through vendor sales and sponsorship.
I run a small-business, but don’t have a unit within your boundaries, can I be a BIA member?
No. BIA membership is limited to those who occupy commerical units within our boundaries.
