Cabbagetown Reduces

Note: In light of COVID-19, please confirm with participating restaurants and stores that they are currently accepting reusable containers

Cabbagetown Reduces is a community-driven initiative to reduce single-use plastics and packaging in our neighbourhood by encouraging both consumers and businesses to practice waste reduction together.

This initiative promotes the Bring Your Own “BYO” habits of consumers. This means that participating businesses allow their customers to bring their own clean containers to be filled instead of using in-store available packaging. This include reusable containers such as:

  • coffee cups

  • water bottles

  • string bags for produce

  • cloth bags for bread and bulk food

  • reusable containers for takeout food and deli items such as meat, fish and cheese

  • and of course a reusable shopping bag

By promoting the Bring Your Own “BYO” habits of our residents, we can reduce the amount of unnecessary and single-use waste we’re creating in our community.

Participating businesses display the Cabbagetown Reduces sticker at the door and accept customers’ reusable containers whenever possible. All participating businesses are promoted on the @CabbagetownReduces instagram page, along with other waste reduction tips!

Why participate in Cabbagetown Reduces?

The plastic we use and throw away everyday can be found everywhere, including as microscopic pieces in our food and water. Plastic does not decompose, it only breaks down into smaller pieces, and we produce more of it than we can recycle (Toronto recycles only about 9% of the plastic we use). This initiative aims to avoid using this plastic in the first place.

Interested in joining the Cabbagetown Reduces team as community volunteer?

This initiative is resident-driven. Volunteers can help spread the word at school, in programs or organizations that you participate in, or to the neighbors on your block. The more our neighbors know, the more impact it will have.

Please email cabbagetownreduces@gmail.com if you’d like to know more or volunteer.
