233 Carlton Resource Centre for Women Construction Update
233 Carlton Street is expected to replace the existing Adelaide Women’s Resource Centre. The site will focus on providing 24-hour drop-in support services for vulnerable women who are at risk of gender-based violence and experiencing homelessness.
The construction at 233 Carlton remains on schedule and began in January of this year. The Centre is expected to open in the first quarter of 2024. The Centre will provide much-needed services in our ward that is uniquely affected by the City-wide housing crisis.
The Resource Centre for Women is a resource centre offering many program and services where some women rest overnight. Women can stay as long as they want or need to, the resource and 24 hour drop-in centre is not a shelter. For many vulnerable women, this Centre is their “safe-place”.
This new location, will adjust their program to take advantage of new facilities, such as a teaching kitchen, and potential new partnerships with local agencies such as Dixon Hall and the Yonge Street Mission. Operated by Fred Victor, they will continue to help clients find permanent housing, leading to improved well-being for the clients. The service will likely serve both existing clients and women in Cabbagetown.
